Its that time of the year....

Haha...I know I suck at this blogging crap. I'm actually doing good with facebook and twitter. This sometimes just seems like too much work. Anyway, I came across this editorial from Maryland's first Muslim lawmaker Saqib Ali. Its amazing and many people should learn from this. Here's my favorite part....The topic is Gay Marriage.
"I'm proud that I'll have stood on the right side of history: In support of full marital rights for same-sex couples. My stance on this issue isn't politically expedient. Homosexuality is strictly forbidden in Islam. As such I have evinced much grief from my most conservative supporters. But I recognize that I represent people of all faiths and no faith at all. If I tried to enforce religion by law — as in a theocracy — I would be doing a disservice to my both constituents and to my religion."

Many of our current lawmakers could learn from this. You are appointed to your position by the majority of the people you represent, you have a duty to look out for minority rights as well as the will of the majority. You are to vote on topics based on their best interest as a whole, not just the few that agree with your thoughts. You should know the people you represent, you need to do the right thing.
